Cynthia Kenyon, PhD, director of the Hillblom Center for the Biology of Aging, department of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF, delivered the AGA Foundation's Morton I. Grossman Distinguished Lectureship at DDW 2009. Her lecture is titled "From Worms to Mammals: Genes and Cells That Regulate the Aging Process."

In 1993, Dr. Kenyon and colleagues' discovery that a single-gene mutation could double the lifespan of C. elegans sparked an intensive study of the molecular biology of aging. These findings have now led to the discovery that an evolutionarily conserved hormone signaling system controls aging in other organisms as well, including mammals.

The Morton I. Grossman Lecture was established in 1989 by a group of UCLA Center for Ulcer Research and Education (CURE) Digestive Disease Research Center investigators and alumni wishing to commemorate the contributions of CURE's founder and first director. Dr. Morton I. Grossman is considered the father of modern gastrointestinal endocrine physiology. His most important contributions lay in defining the secretory mechanisms of the stomach and pancreas and the actions of regulatory gastrointestinal peptides.

Obesity is a significant risk factor for several gastrointestinal (GI) disorders with large economic burdens. Reducing the risk of obesity should be part of the gastroenterologist's management strategy in the treatment or prevention of these disorders.

AGA Institute has released two online modules to enhance your knowledge about the role of nutrition and obesity in gastroenterology.

• Obesity for the Gastroenterologist — Includes an overview of dietary, behavioral, drug and surgical management options for successful weight loss and maintenance.

During this call, CMS provided an overview of the background and goals of the national RAC program. Cecile Katzoff, MGA, CGCS, vice president, AGA consulting services, provided useful tips on how gastroenterology practices can prepare for RAC audits, including potential areas of RAC reviews for GI practices and ways to ensure proper coding and documentation to minimize the potential for repayment of claims to the Medicare program. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), along with the AGA Institute hosted a Special Open Door Forum on Sept. 23, 2008 to discuss participation in the 2008 and future Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) programs. The program will address important esophageal disorders in juniors and adolescents, in mid-life, and in seniors.

• Recognize the significance of esophageal eosinophilia in children, and in adults, the overlap between GERD and eosinophilic esophagitis and the implications for treatment.
• Describe the association of obesity, GERD, Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal adenocarcinoma.
• Determine that prolonged nocturnal acid exposure — if inadequately treated — can lead to serious esophageal complications such as high grade GERD, stricture, Barrett’s esophagus, and esophageal adenocarcinoma.
• Recognize patients with non-cardiac chest pain and appreciate the indications for investigation and anti-secretory treatment.
• Explain that acid secretion continues into late adulthood and that acid reflux can be at least as damaging in the elderly as the young, even though there may be relatively lower levels of symptom perception.

This exciting program selected 40 GI fellows to attend two–and–a–half days of lectures and hands–on demonstrations about basic nutrition.
