There is enormous potential for technological innovation in gastroenterology. While recent advances in minimally invasive surgery and endoscopic procedures have made inroads to enhanced patient care, there are still many unmet needs to be addressed. The GI tract could also hold the key to future therapies for widespread chronic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity.

This conference will bring together inventors, medical device companies and investors to explore lessons learned from failed but promising GI technologies that did not achieve favorable coverage or reimbursement, identify future opportunities, address what can be done to overcome the barriers to transitioning new concepts into clinical practice, and encourage investment in future technologies.

Conference participants will each play an important role in helping to support and ultimately stimulate innovation that will advance the field of GI and improve patient outcomes.

Who Should Attend and Why

GI physician inventor - Learn how to take an idea from prototype to market acceptance and approval, including the critical elements in designing and conducting meaningful clinical trials, and what investors and industry executives look for when deciding to invest in potential new technologies.

Medical device company representatives - Discover how to overcome clinical trial, regulatory, reimbursement and coverage hurdles; how comparative effectiveness will affect the adoption process; and how investors indentify potential investment opportunities.

Investors - Identify emerging diagnostic and therapeutic technologies with the potential to generate high rates of return, and learn about how the AGA plans to support innovation in the GI field.

This informal workshop will emphasize attendee participation and close faculty/attendee interaction. There will be 12 plenary and six breakout sessions in which faculty will conduct various exercises, such as preparing and writing grants and clinical proposals.

A popular feature of this workshop is the one-on-one mentoring sessions with experienced faculty. Attendees will be paired with a faculty mentor based on their current research project. In addition, representatives from NIH will be there to consult with attendees.
