Audience: MD/PhD students
Description:

During this program, attendees with attend a series of lectures and interactive discussions that will emphasize the broad spectrum of GI research opportunities and demonstrate how gastroenterology can cultivate their particular areas of research, e.g., oncology, infectious disease, gender impact, etc.

Learning Objectives:

Upon the completion of this workshop, successful learners will be able to:
 

  • Report the wide range of research possibilities and special interest areas in gastroenterology.
  • Describe how to successfully combine research and clinical responsibilities.
  • List the governmental and non-governmental sources in funding an academic career.
  • State the importance of mentoring in advancing an academic career.
  • Define the training expectations for an internal medicine resident and gastroenterology fellow.
  • Discuss of the various career-enhancing resources available through the AGA Institute.

     
Key Features:

This program offers a unique chance to interact and network with senior and junior GI faculty who are attending the concurrent AGA/AASLD Academic Skills Workshop. Each attendee will be assigned a mentor and be offered one-on-one consultation.

Scholarships:

Applicants who are accepted to attend will receive a scholarship to cover lodging and air/ground transportation. AGA Institute will provide most meals onsite. There is no registration fee.

Selection Criteria:

The program is open to MD/PhD students in any year of study, whether they have already commited to a thesis in research in GI or would like to learn more about the various opportunities in GI. Applications will be reviewed by the MD/PhD course directors and faculty. Candidates will be selected based on their commitment to GI and their research interests. A limited number of applicants will be selected to attend.
